Estoril Film Festival '08

This is just one more portuguese film festival, among many others. However, do not think this is JUST one more... Estoril Film Festival 2008 is under the direction of Paulo Branco, who tries to celebrate cinema as an artistic creation, exploring its three components - art, entertainment and industry. Focusing on the work of the most important and remarkable directors of our time, this film festival bring us an exchanging knowledge, offering different ways of seeing cinema with masterclasses, public meetings with international artists, debates, concerts and exhibitions. The Festival will also host a meeting between the best European film schools, the annual meeting of Europa Distribution and a debate with some of the most well known international critics. I am sorry for my late post, since the festival is already finished. It took place in the Estoril Casino from 14th to 22nd of Nov.

Here is the list of the hounors for this year:

BEST FILM ESTORIL FILM FESTIVAL 2008

Wild Field, by Mikhail Kalatozishvili
108’|RU|2008

A hard and magical look over the russian steppe. A film that caught the jury’s eye for its intimate and expansive beauty. The story about a provincial doctor who discovers a strange force, an invisible threat.
Between the tradition of the classical Russian cinema and an outstanding modernity, Wild Field is the great discover of the Festival.

SPECIAL JURY PRIZE – CASCAIS TOWN COUNCIL
Ex-aequo
Involuntary, by Ruben Ostlund
98’|SW|2008
The new enfant terrible of the new Swedish cinema stages a play of human pictures in the middle of the countryside Summer. Situations on the limit shot in a context of an extreme realistic experience. A film about friends, traumas of the past and the little lessons we learn with our mistakes. Ruben Ostlund reveals his work in Portugal.
Hooked, de Adrian Sitaru
84’|RO|2008
One more time the new Romanian cinema triumphs in an international festival. A case of charm at the first glance, Hooked was one of the sensations in the last Venice Festival and establishes the talent of Sitaru, cineaste who uses video as a subjective element. Hooked is also a film of actors shot with minimalism.

CINE-EUROPA PRIZE

Shultes, de Bakur Bakuradze
100’|RU|2008
The honors list of the festival consecrates again the Russian cinema. Shultes is a noir variation of an unlikely friends tale: a deluded pickpocket and a child from the streets of Moscow. A raw portrait of a very particular Russian sadness, Shultes puts Bakur Bakuradze on the map, director who knows how to create atmospheres with splashes of classic American cinema and the most intriguing Russia dryness.

Pineapple express

"Your stupidity amazes me..." That's one of the deepest lines this comedy film has, which is full of car chases, "funny" violence (the scene of the fork is hilarious) and a lot of stupidity. Of course it's not a movie of great quality, but it achieves it's purpose, making you sit and laugh as idiot while you watch the two main characters (who are stoned 100% of the time) being chased by some very smart gang members.
Cheers for stupidity and for this kind of films!
Me, and Rotten Tomatoes recommend it!
B.F.F.F.! (Best Fu***ing Friendship Forever!, other great quote of the film)

Bergen International Film Festival 2008

It happens that Norway is not just a place to study, at least not for me. Besides the Oslo Film Festival, I also went to the BIFF 2008.
Unfortunately I only had the opportunity to go on the frist and last day. Both of the movie sthat I saw were in my list for a long time.
The first one is really known among the cinema community, as it belongs to the Cohen brothers. "Burn After Reading" was an hilariant movie that I presented here a few months ago. But here it is again:

The actors were really good, specially the fabulous John Malkovich. I totally recomend it!

The second one was "Son of Rambow", a movie from the director
Garth Jennings.

It was about a relationship between two little boys who decided to make a shortfilm about the son of Rambo.

With a very good guide, "Son of Rambow" is not just a film for children, as it can also have a huge impact on adults.

You can find more information about BIFF 2008 on its official website.

I am sorry for the late but check it out!!!

Film fra Sør

Films from the South

In our stay in Oslo we had the opportunity to check what was going on in Norway's capital city concerning films and there was a festival called "Films from the South", presenting films from Latin America, Africa and Asia. The festival is held every year since 1991 on different cinemas of Oslo. Al tough the selection of the films seems good, we were not very lucky with our choice. The film we saw was "This is Chaos" or "Heya Fawda"(Egypt, 2007) watch the trailer here. The film is about a corrupt policeman who falls in love with a girl who doesn't like him, and through almost 2 hours we see how "Hatem" suffers from this uncorresponded love, with one of the worst acting performances I have seen in my entire life. The acting is so bad that it seemed funny to most of the audience. In a few words, the film can be seen as the perfect recepie of how to ruin a movie: bad script, terrible actors, horrible direction. Even tough, it's always good to take risks like this, as you never know when a non-commercial movie will be nice until you see it.
Soon we'll have Bergen International Film Festival in town, and all the best of it here in the blog...
Cheers!

Bergen Animation Festival

It is a little bit late to talk about this festival, but...

I had the opportunity to watch two short movies and a long one.

The first short-film was about blindness but, unfortunately, it was in Norwegian.

The other two prima-donnas were from the same director, Bill Plympton. "Hot Dog" was the name of his short-film in this festival, a funny movie with a typical American humour. This was the 2nd sequel of "Guard Dog" from 2004.

But the main reason that took me there was "Idiots and Angels". This is the last feature of Plympton. "Idiots and Angels", as described on his website, is a "dark comedy about a man's battle for his soul".

New contributor!

Hello film-addicted community:

My name is Enrique, from Mexico and I will be contributing on this blog. Sometimes my comments will be in English, others in Spanish, and as my Portuguese improves I will comment on that beautiful language too. I'm very interested in art-cinema and it will be my main topic, but one day I might comment on a blockbuster too!
Here I post a link to a very good website called Rotten Tomatoes, which offers the critics of the best experts on almost every film, it's very useful, although in this Blog I will post my personal critics and opinions of the world of film.

Queer Lisboa 12

This is a really peculiar cinema festival, but it is worth it anyway.

Queer Lisboa 12 is the 12th Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
They will select films from three diffent categories: long-film, documentary and short-film, among many other activities, such as discussions about social impacts.

The Festival will take place at "Cinema S. Jorge" from 19th to 27th of September.

True Blood

From the creator of "Six Feet Under", here is a very different tv show.

"True Blood" was created by Alan Ball and is based on the "Sookie Stackhouse" book series by Charlaine Harris.
The series is about the coexistence of vampires and humans. That was only possible by the japanese invention "TruBlood", a synthetic blood. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress, falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and the story begins.

Here is the trailer.

Aqui estão alguns exemplos da sua enorme e brilhante obra.

Uma mulher é uma mulher (Une femme est une femme), 1961

Bande à part (Bande à part), 1964
